Our eco buildings

Lime plaster & pointing: lime plaster and pointing (from Ty Mawr, www.???) this has been used inside and out in the barn conversions. This traditional material allows the building to properly breathe and so is healthier for us humans as well as looking beautiful. Three layers of lime plaster are put onto Wood Wool Board (link), which is environmentally friendly alternative to normal plasterboard.

Insulation: each of the converted barns is so well insulated, with Welsh sheep’s wool or recycled Warmcell (link) (made in Wales from finely shredded recycled newspapers), that you will usually only need the heating in deeper winter months.

Heat: when you do need heating, it is under floor in the cottages, which is the most efficient form of heating, and run by Ground Source heat. You can then top things up with our lovely wood burners, which we have in each key space at Tyddyn Retreat. In addition, we have solar water heating for the Cottages.

Light: did you know that a using a normal dimmer switch doesn’t reduce the amount of electricity you use? We didn’t. Now that we do, we have all our lighting on Lutron programmable Grafik Eye panels, which do reduce the amount of power used when dimmed. The additional great benefit is that you can create a series of programmed lighting moods for each space. We have used advanced eco lighting from John Cullen, to complete the picture. We make extensive use of natural light through light columns and velux style windows – natural light being both healthy and saving on power.

Decoration & furnishings: all our paint is eco; floors are natural wood (oak) from sustainable sources; oak window, doors and furniture and locally hand made; we have used recycled slate on floors, work surfaces and window sills; beautiful recycled Welsh wool throws are there for cozy nights in front of a roaring fire in the wood burner – or to take as lovely gifts.
